What Hypnotherapy Really Feels Like (And Why It’s Not What You Think)
If you’d asked me what hypnotherapy really feels like 7 years ago, I wouldn’t have had a clue.
It wasn’t even on my radar.
I’d tried different holistic therapies to help with my mood, skin, pulled muscles and even fertility. But hypnotherapy for anxiety and stress? No. That felt like a step too far.
My only experience of hypnosis was watching a stage show.
And honestly, it terrified me.
The Biggest Myth About Hypnotherapy
When most people think about hypnosis, they think of stage hypnotists.
People being picked out of the audience.
Being made to do silly things.
Clucking like chickens.
I remember sitting there hoping I wouldn’t be chosen. Afraid of what the hypnotist might “make me” do. And afraid of what people would think.
I assumed that’s what hypnotherapy was.
A click of the fingers.
A shout of “sleep”.
Total loss of control.
I thought people passed out completely, like they were under anaesthetic. That they couldn’t hear anything. And even that they wouldn’t remember a thing.
It felt scary and completely not for me.
What Changed My Mind About Hypnotherapy
Like many people, I didn’t turn to hypnotherapy for anxiety until I felt like I’d tried everything else.
I’d hit a point where nothing felt like it was working.
I’d been made redundant from my job as a Biomedical Scientist, and I felt lost. My confidence had taken a knock. I was struggling internally, even if everything looked relatively fine on the outside.
Around that time, I reconnected with someone I’d met a couple of years earlier. I thought she was a life coach.
It turned out she was a hypnotherapist.
That surprised me.
Even more surprising was what she told me.
Hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis.
It’s actually a gentle, calming way to work with the mind. Especially for things like anxiety, overwhelm and confidence.
So that’s when I decided to give it a try.
What Is Hypnosis (Really)?
Before I explain what hypnotherapy feels like, it helps to understand what hypnosis actually is.
Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation and focus.
You already go into hypnosis every day.
When you’re drifting off to sleep
When you first wake up
When you’re daydreaming or “zoning out”
That moment where your body feels relaxed and your mind is quiet… that’s hypnosis.
It’s not…
Being asleep.
Losing control.
Being unconscious.
It’s actually a very aware state.
What Hypnotherapy Really Feels Like
So, what does hypnotherapy feel like?
At the beginning, it’s completely normal to feel a bit distracted.
You might notice thoughts like:
“Am I doing this right?”
“I hope I don’t say anything silly”
“This chair is quite comfy actually”
Then, as you’re gently guided to relax, something shifts.
Your body starts to feel heavier.
Then you sink into the chair.
And breathing becomes more regular.
The fidgeting stops (as your body is preparing for sleep).
Your thoughts don’t come in so quickly.
You know you could move if you wanted to… but you just can’t be bothered.
For me, it felt like that relaxed, floaty feeling you might get after a glass of wine. Calm, loose, and completely at ease.
Sometimes your body feels so relaxed it’s almost like it disappears. I often describe it as my hands “melting” into my legs.
The Calm Focus of Hypnosis
As you go deeper into hypnosis, something interesting happens.
Your mind becomes more focused.
Not busy. Not overthinking. Just calm and focused.
This is where imagination comes in.
You might:
imagine a peaceful place
feel warmth from the sun
hear birds or notice sounds
feel textures or sensations
Not everyone visualises clearly, and that’s completely normal.
Some people imagine through feeling or sound rather than pictures. Some people get a general sense rather than clear images.
There’s no right or wrong way.
The important thing is that your mind is calm, open and focused.
What Happens During Hypnotherapy
This is where the therapy part begins.
Using this relaxed state, hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to create change.
You might notice:
answers popping into your mind
new perspectives forming
memories surfacing (only if helpful and safe)
emotional release, like feeling tearful
a sense of calm or relief
This is particularly powerful for anxiety, stress, overwhelm and confidence.
You’re not being controlled.
You’re simply more open to helpful suggestions and new ways of thinking.
Coming Out of Hypnosis
At the end of a hypnotherapy session, you’re gently brought back.
You don’t “snap” out of it.
You gradually become more alert, more awake.
Most people say it feels like:
waking from a really good nap
feeling deeply relaxed
or sometimes surprisingly energised
You can hear everything during the session. Most people remember everything too.
And you’re always in control.
The Real Power of Hypnotherapy
The most important part of hypnotherapy isn’t what happens in the session.
It’s what happens afterwards.
The changes you notice:
later that day
that week
that month
- even years later
Things that used to bother you… just don’t.
You feel calmer.
More confident.
Less reactive.
Seven years ago, I was afraid of speaking up, meeting new people, and constantly worrying about what others thought of me.
Now?
I just don’t.
And that’s the real magic of hypnotherapy for anxiety and stress.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been curious about what hypnotherapy feels like, I hope this has reassured you.
It’s not scary.
You’re not out of ontrol.
It’s not what you’ve seen on stage.
It’s calm, gentle and powerful in a quiet, steady way.
And sometimes, it’s exactly what your mind has been needing all along
